What Do Volunteers Do?
Each week, our volunteers empower thousands of young people to learn new skills, make new friends, and gain confidence. They are our everyday heroes, shaping the lives of young people for the better, while also discovering more about themselves along the way.
Right now, nearly 60,000 young people are on waiting lists to join Scouting in the UK. We’re more relevant and needed than ever before, but it’s not always easy to meet the growing demand.
That’s Where You Come In
You don’t have to be an expert adventurer like our Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields, to make a difference. You don’t need to have been a Scout yourself. You don’t even have to know how to pitch a tent. Scouting is open to people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Whether you're a tea maker, a skill sharer, a minibus driver, or a first aider, there's a place for you. Scouting needs volunteers of all kinds—whether you can give a little time now and then or you’re able to commit more regularly. From assisting at weekly meetings and helping with exciting events to organising camps and adventures, every role is important. No two meetings are the same, but the difference you make is always significant.
Whether you're helping run an activity, organising a night away, or even making sandwiches for a hungry group of young people, you’ll create memories and experiences that last a lifetime.
We Provide the Training. You show Up and Get Stuck In!
As long as you're over 18, you can volunteer in Scouting, with no upper age limit. If you’re aged 14–18, you can also become a Young Leader, contributing to the development of younger Scouts while gaining valuable leadership experience.
Sounds Fun? Worthwhile? It Is.
That’s where you come in! We’re here to support you in your role. The difference you make is not just important; it’s life-changing—for both you and the young people you help.
